Time Management

Effective Presentations

One of the first assignments which we received, as first year student’s, in Social care at ITB, was to present a five minute presentation based on a topic of our choice.

You are not alone if the thought of speaking in public scares you! I am naturally quite an out spoken person but the thoughts of speaking in front of an audience literally terrified me.

Therefore in an effort to overcome my fears of public speaking I decided to view this assignment as an opportunity to develop the presentation skills which I would require, both as a student and as a Social Care Practitioner, to deliver effective presentations in the future.

I took full advantage of the guidance and support which we received from our lecturer David Cook, which allowed me to develop the presentation skills which I needed to construct an effective presentation.

I found the following mantra extremely use full.
  • Tell 'Em What You're Gonna Tell 'Em! ( Introduction)
  • Tell'Em!( Body)
  • Tell 'Em What You Told 'Em!( Conclusion/Summary)

The presentation skills which I acquired enabled me to communicate my message to my audience, in a clear and concise manner, and in a way which gained their attention. In order to do this successfully it requires preparation, research, structure, accuracy/timing and practice. The importance of preparation cannot be understated, as it allows you to develop confident in your own ability, and therefore it is  key to you being relaxed.

In preparation for my own presentation I found the following link really use-full as it is both insightful and inspiring.
